The discussion that follows was prompted by the article: World Revolution no.292, March 2006. The discussion was initiated by Fred.Below is the discussion so far. Feel free to add your own comments!
In the notes to this article there is a letter from a worker. Something worthy of particular attention he said went as follows: "That’s why the union bigwigs become nervous when comrades not only do not try to avoid discussion but, on the contrary, seek it out, because open discussion is a working class weapon. The union bigwigs, like the system as a whole, are scared of workers thinking."
The bourgeoisie prefers what they call "open discussion" confined to parliaments, or official meetings that are properly "chaired" ie controlled. For this way everything is kept "fair and above board" ie, within the strangling constraints of bourgeois legality and bourgeois democracy. This way there is no danger of anyone at all doing much thinking, cliches being the order of the day, especially workers who are hampered and restrained by bourgeois petty rules and regulations for the conduct of such a charade. Such mockeries of democracy are easily open to abuse from leftists, and other lovers of "points of order", who also don't want anything as dangerous as "workers thinking" taking place while they're around.
Our rulers, bosses and exploiters, like to kid themselves that in fact we workers can't or won't, or don't think! When we start to do it they are thrown into confusion and finally terror. For our thoughts and our class consciousness is the biggest threat they will ever have to face this side of our revolution. Similarly, when we talk freely with one another, they and their unions are immediately undermined. For we are outlaws in their system. Just there to be screwed and nothing else. Our open discussion, our shared thoughts and our solidarity, so foreign to them, so clearly illegal in their eyes, posits the possibility of a new world, and an end to theirs. This is what they cannot stomach, and why they seek always to divide us, and block our thoughts and our communication.
