Hillsborough et al.

There is currently an enquiry going on about the killing of 96 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough around 25 years ago. What we are finding out during this enquiry is what we knew about a week after the event: the police were mainly responsible and, immediately after the event, there was a cover up involving the police, the press, the BBC, the F.A., the NHS and all the political parties. The chief architect of the cover up and the man most responsible for the manslaughter was quickly promoted after the event. And this shows a pattern in the ruling class that is both an insult and attack on the working class.

The latest article on the Paris shootings (and events in the US and Britain) show how the police have almost immunity to do anything now - certainly get away with murder. And the article on Mexico shows how the bourgeoisie, absolutely machiavellian even in "backward" Mexico, contrives to set up endless "enquiries", endless proceedings that never amount to anything in order to that elements of their own class escape censure (though they will sacrifice one or two elements when necessary) and to make it look as if the state, in its own way, does represent the interests of the working class.

In Britain, the Hillsborough enquiry is just one more example, more sophisticated than Mexico maybe but basically the same, of a number of enquires being used to whitewash the state and its killers at every level. There's the laughable enquiry into the Iraq War - the third or fourth so far. There's the "enquiry" into the Westminster paedophile ring where the present Home Secretary proposed a chairwoman who was a neighbour, drinking and dinner party friend of one of the major suspects (as well as being something big in the city); the enquiry into the BBC's star attraction, Jimmy Savile, goes on but all his BBC pimps and protectors have already been promoted. Words like "responsibility" and "accountability" are absolutely meaningless in this class context. The police officer in charge of the death squad that killed Charles de Menezes in a cold blooded execution was promoted. The police chief in charge of the Oxfordshire force that a  few weeks ago was found to be complicit in the sexual abuse of under-age girls took "full responsibility" and was promoted.

There's plenty of other "enquires" coming through to be played up as showing the "clean state" and its "accountable" elite.
